A Splash of Colour!

Time to share another wedding by one of my favourite English wedding photographers – Lee Allen Photography. This time it’s Nicky and Chris, who were married at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the summer.

Nicky and Chris's wedding: at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Photos by Lee Allen

I love Nicky’s corset – the rich turquoise / blue is gorgeous, and she really stands out from the crowd! The full skirt she wore is a beautiful contrast with the corset, and her wrap just adds another layer of loveliness. Chris looks great in a grey suit with red check shirt, top button undone… it’s a relaxed, summery, happy wedding theme and I think it’s great. I’ll get to the wellies later…

Nicky and her bridesmaids get ready for the wedding

Lovely bright colours run through Nicky’s wedding day. Every photograph is bright and cheerful, from the preparations at the girls’ house in the morning right through to the ceremony. Somehow Lee has got a bit of that lush blue and pink in every image!

Nicky's corset is wonderful, from the smallest details to the beautiful shape

Nicky’s lucky silver sixpence is sewn onto her corset. This lovely detail photograph shows the gorgeous quality of Nicky’s corset, the lovely lacing and weave of the fabric, and lacing it up looks really wonderful. Love that blue!

The bridesmaids give wedding readings as Nicky and Chris enjoy their relaxed ceremony

The wedding ceremony included readings from Chris's mum and from the bridesmaids

Chris’s mum gave one of the wedding readings, and I love how this first photo shows her looking at her son – the second photograph is all smiles. It’s the tiny details of the day that a good wedding photographer will catch: how Chris was looking at Nicky, that glance from his mum… all the little bits you dream of having in the perfect wedding album are here!

The best bit!

The ceremony complete, it’s time for the newlyweds to have some fun… captured perfectly in this lovely photograph full of smiling faces.

As Lee calls this photograph on his own blog: "Happiness is... friends and confetti"

Throwing confetti, smiling, yelling, this is a great moment! All the guests get into the spirit of the moment, and the photo is lively and colourful with the pink and blue outfits and confetti, the bright sunflower bouquets and so many happy faces. Definitely one of my favourite confetti photos!

Nothing beats a great pair of wedding wellies - Nicky's are fantastic!

Lee Allen is the recommended photographer for Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and knows the park well enough to get fantastic photographs every time. Nicky and Chris were straight off to the park after the ceremony for some really fun photos, and some romantic shots too.

Jumping for joy! I think this is how everyone feels just after the ceremony, more brides and grooms should express it!

This is what happens when you find a wedding photographer you get along with: you relax, you have a laugh together, and you get some cracking photos to remember your wedding day. Lee had previously spent a day with Nicky and Chris doing a pre-wedding shoot, which is also on his website. It’s a great way to relax and get to know your photographer.

A romantic stroll in the rolling Yorkshire hills, and a little rest with a big copper person!

The sculpture park is a great setting for contemporary wedding photos, with plenty of choices for interesting pictures.

Nicky and Chris's favourite bit of the park makes a lovely backdrop for some very contemporary wedding photos

I love this picture: it is quaint, quiet, timeless England at its best, and Nicky and Chris look so good together.

One last shot as Nicky and Chris head back to the reception – and fantastic news: they’ve got a tipi!

Heading back to the wedding ceremony in a traditional English tipi!

Tipis and tents are great for less formal weddings. Your tipi is like a blank canvas, and you can customise everything from the tables, flooring, lighting and candles… which made a tipi perfect for Nicky and Chris. Lee makes the very most of the lovely details:

Strawberries and cream in a cake; welcoming wedding tables; pebble place settings

The strawberries and cream wedding cake is a beauty, isn’t it! It’s great to see the variety of new wedding cakes that are becoming so popular – this one is a wonderful idea. Lee also captures the warmth and simplicity of the table settings, each one finished off with a personalised pebble favour.

I'd love to have been there for Chris's speech!

Another fantastic picture for the wedding album: the top table are crying with laughter as Chris makes his speech. It’s clearly an emotional evening, and the great pictures just keep on coming. A wedding should be more than lots of formal images, and this photo is a shining example of the emotions you can get on film if you know how!

The bride and bridesmaids raise their glasses

I think Lee Allen is invisible. It seems no one ever knows he’s there… every shot is so natural, every smile so real. Nicky and her bridesmaids raise their glasses, making for a great photo which also has the lovely table centrepiece in the corner. Nicky used sunflowers, pink gerberas and daisies to create a really pretty, colourful flower theme for the day.

The evening reception in the wedding tipi

I can’t beat Lee’s own blog comment for this first picture: he calls it “Mummy Chris rocking this year’s two watch look with ease…”

Above right, the first dance just feels like the perfect end to a really great day.

And off go Nicky and Chris into the sunset*, happily ever after... (*improvised!)

Thanks once again to the fabulous Lee Allen for sharing this lovely summer wedding with us. Those rich colours, sunflowers and warm, cosy reception photos have been the perfect tonic for a snowy day!

Please visit Lee’s website to see more excellent wedding photographs. Lee is based in the West Midlands and covers the whole of the UK on request (also international assignments). For more of Lee’s contemporary photography work, check out his blog as well.
